Student Health Records - Legal Requirements

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Public schools are more frequently employing school nurses to address student health issues by the awareness of student health issues and special education identification. Based on this many schools don’t realize the entire door they open to student privacy violations when they do that and especially the legal requirements that apply to student health care information are not always clear.

The SHCC can make copies of student medical records with written consent of the patient. Medical records of UF students are kept 10 years following enrollment inactivity or graduation. If a student returns to enroll at UF within that timeframe, his/her records are reactivated. After 10 years of inactivity, the medical records are shredded and burned in accordance with regulations. Immunization records, however, have been stored on microfilm since 1987, and these will be retained for the convenience of current and former students who need access to this information.
